Community Impact

Meeting Community Needs with Grants and Programs

The Saint Paul Foundation distributed $29.6 million in grants in 2004. These grants reflect donor interests and are targeted to meet current and emerging community needs.

Commitment to Community
In 1998, The Saint Paul Foundation adopted a 10-year strategic grantmaking plan called Connections: Commitment to Community. This long-range grantmaking plan is designed to address the East Metro region's critical issues. At the center of the plan are four long-range outcomes:

  • Creating an anti-racist community
  • Economic development for all segments of the East Metro area
  • Strong families that provide healthy beginnings for children and youth
  • Quality education for all

The Foundation is implementing its goals through the following:

Facing Race Anti-Racism Initiative
It's an old issue that hasn't gone away. Racism is still limiting opportunities for many people in Saint Paul and surrounding communities, and it's a difficult topic that is often ignored or avoided. Read more about how the Foundation is bringing this issue to the forefront and searching for solutions through grantmaking and its new initiative.

Community Sharing Fund
Working through existing community organizations to assist individuals and families who are in crisis situations, the Fund approves small grants ($10 to $700) to individual families for rent and mortgage assistance, utility costs, car repairs, bus fare, medical needs, moving and storage costs, and other living expenses.

Management Improvement Fund (MIF)
The MIF provides financial assistance to nonprofit organizations working to improve their organizational capacity and management capabilities.

Words Work!
A partnership between The Saint Paul Foundation, Ramsey Action Programs Head Start and the Minnesota Literacy Council, Words Work! is an early literacy program for children in Saint Paul, and it is paving the way for the future by preparing kids to succeed in school.

The Fund for Teachers
In a partnership between the Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS), The Fund for Teachers, and The Saint Paul Foundation, teachers in the SPPS district can receive grants for summer enrichment opportunities. The focus is on energizing and celebrating the essential work of K-12 teachers.
